Symposium Objectives
1. Understand how to plan for successful difficult conversations.
2. Understand the principles of negotiation techniques.
3. Improve communication and negotiation skills through role playing and practice
at the symposium.
Symposium Description:
In this symposium, we aim to provide participates with skills to approach difficult
conversations and negotiations, to empower them in advocating for their needs in
neuro-ophthalmic practice. Our expert panel includes providers who have experience in
neuro-ophthalmic practice and in formal negotiation training, and Catherine Soehner,
MLS, BSN, is the Associate Dean and Executive Director of the Eccles Health Sciences
Library (home to NOVEL) and the author of Effective Difficult Conversations. The panel
will provide didactic teaching on the principles of negotiation and illustrative role-playing
scenarios. Afterward, participants will have the opportunity to practice techniques in
one-on-one structured role playing. This symposium is co-sponsored by the Women in
Neuro-ophthalmology (WIN) Committee and the Young Neuro-ophthalmologist (YONO)
Committee.
