The Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Access to Ophthalmology Scholarship (AOS) supports the professional development of residents who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving access in eye care delivery. The initiative strengthens the pipeline of future ophthalmologists who are dedicated to advancing patient-centered care and improving outcomes in underserved communities.
DEFINITION – UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS
For the purposes of this scholarship, "underserved populations" refers to communities or groups that experience limited access to timely, affordable, and high-quality eye care due to factors such as geographic isolation, economic disadvantage, shortage of healthcare providers, language or cultural barriers, disability, or lack of health insurance coverage. These populations may include, but are not limited to, rural or remote communities, low-income urban areas, individuals with limited English proficiency, and patients facing systemic barriers to healthcare access.
LONG-TERM GOAL
